Last week I had the opportunity to attend the premiere of " Road " (Javier Fesser) at the festival San Sebastian. I must say I did not enjoy while on a movie theater and enjoyed during the viewing of this movie, although I came to doubt my own objectivity in this sense, motivated perhaps by the glut of films themes and styles as rigid as some suggesting that I was undergoing. However, "Road" remained in my retina, not only for several hours, but for several days, leading to even want to know more about the real story in which the film is inspired and that, I assure you, is something that rarely happens. If, moreover, this fine print gave me the film is produced under the competition of a film festival, where supposedly the quality of the films goes beyond the screens and it is inevitable comparisons can only mean that this is an excellent film, probably one of the best English film of recent years. With this film, Javier Fesser, complete a log rotation in his career, moving away, for now at least, the genre of absurd comedy ("Mortadelo and Philemon", "El Milagro de P Tinto") by all who knew him and many hated him. A log rotation already presegiaba its recent incursion in the social drama and his latest short film "Binta and the Great Idea" SEE SHORT , which was nominated for an Oscar for best short. It is difficult to find managers with consolidated races in the world of film to re-shoot in a format, such as short films, where, paradoxically, all the filmmakers are willing to leave to make the jump to the length. Now, we understand that "Binta and the Great Idea" could be more of a test, a test, a 30-minute challenge was marked Fesser to know their limits outside of comedy and, fortunately for English cinema, served to begin the journey to other genres and has resulted in Way. With this feature, Javier Fesser is becoming one of the most versatile directors and more projection (no need to be young to deserve this word) the national scene, and why not, also European.
film "Road" is an exercise cinema at its best extension. Fesser skillfully uses creative techniques and shape of the film is made, while others tend to selectively forget a pretentious way, and combines them to support the development of narrative and make his film in what must be: an experience audio visual embarks the audience on a roller coaster of emotions, immersing mercilessly history. A further success has undoubtedly been the choice of religious subjects on which turns the plot of "road", and that Javier Fesser and its producers have shown great intelligence, as the controversy that will surely generate, security will become an inpage advertising. A controversy that is brilliantly condensed in the phrase that serves to promote the film: "Want to pray that you too will die?".
"Road" shows that in Spain you can make a quality film and the audience. For once, critics and audiences agree, not only in the virtues of the film, but also its shortcomings, because he has them. The movie is not perfect, of course not, and will undoubtedly distinct views. Who will the nearly two hours and a half of the film seems excessive. Some might think that some scenes are unnecessary, even free. Some will think the story is told in a biased and manipulative. And some will think not. But what is certain is that the film will not leave you indifferent and will be talking about, and that is precisely its greatest strength and what makes it indispensable.
Fesser Bravo!
